Our Mission:
The mission of the Washington Housing Authority is to provide safe, quality and affordable housing to low and moderate-income families in the City of Washington, and to promote personal responsibility and self-sufficiency of residents while maintaining the fiscal integrity of the Housing Authority.

Background:
The City of Washington created and the State of North Carolina chartered the Washington Housing Authority in 1961.  The first two residential developments were constructed to replace substandard housing the City and were occupied in 1965.  Currently, the Authority owns and manages 383 public housing units and administers 370 Section 8 housing choice vouchers. 

The Housing Authority has a seven-member Board of Commissioners that provides oversight for the Authority.  Under HUD's report card called the Public Housing Assessment System the Authority has been rated as a "High Performer."  The Authority operates in the following programs:

• Capital Fund (modernization)

• Housing for Families, Elderly, and near Elderly

• Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers for Beaufort County

The Central Office of the Washington Housing Authority is located at 809 Pennsylvania Avenue.  The Public Housing Applications Office is also located there.  The telephone number for applications office is 252.975.1717, TDD 252.946.0062.  Applications are accepted Tuesdays and Thursdays only.  Office hours are 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Office is located at 204 West 9th Street.  The telephone number is 252.946.0081.
