8 Housing Choice Voucher Program
What is Section 8? Section 8 is a HUD subsidized program, also referred to as "Housing Choice Vouchers", "Vouchers", or "HAP" (housing assistance payment). This a program which enables families to secure their own private housing. The Housing Authority currently has 370 vouchers. Applicants are placed on a waiting list.
Applications Due to the large volume of applicants Washington Housing Authority currently is not accepting applications for Section 8 Rental Assistance. When application enrollment is opened, the public will be notified by the Washington Daily News. Applicants for residency may visit the Section 8 Rental Assistance Office located at 204 W. 9th Street, Washington, NC. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 5:00pm. Applicants should bring information on income, social security numbers, and address and telephone number where they can be reached. When applicants are selected to receive assistance, they will be invited to an interview to verify their income and assets. They will need to furnish birth certificates and social security cards for all family members. Criminal reports must also be provided for every family member age 18 and over, available from the Clerk of Court’s office.
Waiting List The average wait for housing is approximately one year. Once an application is complete, applicants must keep it active by updating changes in income, family size or in address or phone number.
